Greenfield

Greenfield, Indiana – Sandra Lee Opel, 79, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2026, while being comforted by her family. Her baking, her smile, and her love for her family will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Sandy was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, to William & Theresa (Mioduszewski) Maki on December 9, 1946. She graduated from McDowell High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, and met her first husband, Douglas Arthur Seib. She and Doug moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they enjoyed life until his early passing. Afterwards, she met Donald Opel, who became the love of her life. They celebrated 41 years of marriage together before her passing.

Sandy was the neighborhood mom who took care of everyone. She helped babysit the neighborhood children and often cut everyone’s hair, drawing on her years as a beautician back in Pennsylvania. Sandy’s big heart helped turn the neighborhood into a close-knit group of friends who eventually felt like family.

To relax, you might find Sandy reading a book, spending time with her beloved cats, watching musicals, or decorating for the holidays. In addition to her festive decorating, Sandy was known to break out her accordion where she played Christmas carols for friends and family. Working in a China shop sparked her love for fine keepsakes that will be treasured by her family and future generations. She never passed up a trip to the outlet malls- there was always room for one more pair of shoes. Sandy was an avid sun worshipper. Her natural green thumb showed in the gorgeous flower beds that surrounded her yard. She especially loved spending her winters snow birding in Largo, Florida, with her husband Pete.

In addition to her parents, Sandy is preceded in death by her brother, John Maki.

She is survived by her husband Donald “Pete” Opel, children Dwayne Michael Opel (Nancy), Kirk Patrick Seib, Donna Lynn Dragoo (Brad), and Stacey Lynn Johnston; grandchildren Sydney Nikole Cavin (Jake), Jacob Hunter Johnston, Rachel Lorene Opel, Laura Kathleen Opel, Carley Dayne Dragoo, and Dylan Cooper Dragoo; as well as sister Cindy Maki.
