Sam Dunbar was born in South Bend, Indiana to Irma Clarie Dykes Dunbar and Willard Parker Dunbar, Sr.

He was a 1945 graduate of Culver Summer Schools, a 1949 graduate of Crawfordsville High School, a 1958 graduate of Purdue University (Electrical Engineering), and a 1970 graduate of Auburn University (MBA). While at Purdue, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma social fraternity.

Mr. Dunbar was a licensed professional Engineer in the State of Indiana. He worked in the defense industry for several years before joining the engineering staff at Esterline Angus in Speedway in 1965. He joined the Quality Engineering staff at Mallory Controls in 1979 and retired in 1992. Mr. Dunbar was a past president of the Indiana National Guard Association and a past president of the Indiana Chapter of the Society of American Value Engineers. He was also a member and past deacon of John Knox Presbyterian Church.

Colonel Dunbar was a citizen soldier, a Korean War Veteran with the Air Force who spent 30+ years with the Air National Guard, retiring as a Full Colonel in 1987. Among his various awards were the Air Force Legion of Merit, The Distinguished Service Medal, Sagamore of the Wabash, and Kentucky Colonel. Colonel Dunbar was a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the War College.

Sam is survived by his beloved wife Barbara; his children Theresa (Ben) Boukai of Westfield, Samuel (Karla Carter) Dunbar Jr. of Indianapolis, and Claire (Michael) Fisher of Zionsville; his brothers Willard Dunbar Jr. and Peter (Tomoko) Dunbar; his sister-in-law Theresa Otremsky; his five grandchildren Keegan Geiler, Glen and Susan Fisher, Sara and Laura Levine; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter Mary Alice Dunbar Geiler.
