Sam McHenry

Sam McHenry, 67, husband of Maury Plambeck, passed away at his home in Indianapolis on August 7, 2026. Sam was born in Cheyenne, WY on May 8, 1959 to Willliam McHenry and Joanne (Adragna) McHenry, who proceeded him in death. His brother, John McHenry, also proceeded him in death.

Sam is survived by Maury, Indianapolis, his siblings, Bruce McHenry, Cheyenne, Jerry McHenry, Cheyenne, Frank McHenry (Ilene), Cheyenne, Julia Robideaux (Robin), Wellington, CO, Concitta Bastian (Curt), Burns, WY, Joe McHenry, Cheyenne, and Dan McHenry (Devon), Cheyenne. Sam is also survived by a loving family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Sam attended the University of Wyoming. Sam danced at the University and, professionally, at the Repertory Dance Theater in Salt Lake City, UT. He later attended Indiana Wesleyan University, where he received his Bachelor’s degree. Sam’s career was primarily in medical management.

Sam and Maury began their life together in 1987, and were married on December 30, 2013. In 1992, Sam was diagnosed with AIDS, and given a life-expectancy of 2 years. Being a stubborn Italian, he beat the odds and lived a fulfilling life for 34 more years. During this time, Sam was faced with significant physical obstacles. He met each with dignity and grace, and was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Sam was a former member of the Board of Directors for the Damien Center. He was a long-time volunteer in the Damien Center food pantry, where he assisted countless individuals. His caring and warm personality helped him develop many friendships throughout his life, but especially through his service at the Damien Center.

Sam also served on the Board of the Herron-Morton Place neighborhood association, and was an active member of the former Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and most recently, Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Sam was also a member of the National Federation of the Blind of Indiana.

Visitation will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 526 E. 52nd Street, from 1-3 pm, Friday, August 21, 2026, with a memorial service to follow. After the service, friends and family are invited to celebrate Sam’s life at Sam and Maury’s home.
