Sally Ann Bowman, of Indianapolis, a professor emeritus of speech/language pathology at the Indiana University Medical School, died on December 12, 2013, at home, with family present. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. She was preceded in death by her husband, William T. (Bill) Bowman, Sr. She is survived by her children, daughter, Nancy Davidson, Kansas City, Kansas, and son, William T. Bowman, Jr., Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Tyler Bowman, Michael(Kate) Davidson, Lisa Davidson (Charles) Brooke, and three great grandchildren. Born on December 11, 1928, in Pontiac, Michigan, Professor Bowman, played clarinet in the high school band, and graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1946, and Western Michigan University in 1951. She earned a Master's degree in Education from Butler University in 1965. Professor Bowman, a career pediatric speech/language pathologist, began her career in Grosse Point, Michigan, as a speech therapist for the metropolitan school district, a speech teacher in Warren Township from 1962-65, and concluded her career as a professor emeritus, Indiana University School of Medicine in 1993. Professor Bowman, in 1977, lectured medical school students and residents at the Riley Children's Hospital craniofacial-oral facial anomalies clinic, Indiana University School of Dentistry, and otolaryngology medical residents at Riley children's hospital and Riegenstrief Health Center. Professor Bowman was a 26 year annual invitee lecturer at Indiana University – Bloomington. Topics ranged from cleft palate, velopharangeal inadequacy, laryngetomy rehabilitation, and stuttering. Professor Bowman was enshrined in the Indiana Speech and Hearing Association Hall of fame in 2008. Professor Bowman was recognized for outstanding achievement by the American Speech and Language Association and declared, "Fellow", in 1992. Professor Bowman was selected for inclusion in, "Who's Who Among Human Service Professionals" in 1988, 89, 90, by the National Reference Institute. She received other inclusions as well. In 1986, Professor Bowman was recognized by the "International Directory of Distinguished Leadership." In 1989, she received the, "National Distinguished Registry" Award-Speech, Language, and Hearing. In conclusion of her active professional career, Professor Bowman was recognized as, "the World's Who's Who of Women." Sally Bowman was named "Sertoman of the Year", twice, 1988 and 1989, for outstanding community service. She created and onsite managed, "Camp Sertoma," Indianapolis, a week long camp for stuttering children from throughout the United States. Sally Bowman, in 1991, received a grant from Indiana Bell Telephone and IBM to pioneer the electronic transmission of medical data pre internet, from a campground cabin. She served on the Board of Directors, downtown Sertoma Club International from 1988-1990. Professor Bowman serviced on the Board of Directors, American Cancer Society, Marion County division in 1993. Professor Bowman wrote and produced 175 video tapes on speech/language pathology that are archived in the Indiana University School of Medicine library. A lifetime patriot, during WWII, teenaged Sally Gordon supported the war effort by working in a factory in Pontiac, Michigan. She was approved for membership of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1991. As an active genealogist, Sally Bowman documented the Gordon-Wollbrink family history in England, back to 1543 and descent form the original Salem, Mass. settlement by ancestor Roger Connant. Professor Bowman was awarded, "Outstanding Service Award" by the Beta Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma in 2001. She received a grant from Alpha Epsilon State, Delta Kappa Gamma-International: continuing Education, Mayo Clinic Invitational Laryngectomy Rehabilitation Seminar. A Celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Flanner and Buchanan - Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington Street.
