Ruthmae King Bennett
92, longtime Zionsville resident passed away April 4, 2013. She was the widow of Harold J Bennett, Sr. In Ruthmae's early years she worked as a beautician. Ruthmae was affectionately known as "Grandma" by her family, staff, and hundreds of children who loved her for her work as cook and part owner of Colonial Village Nursery and Daycare Center.
Ruthmae founded the Melody Club through Noble Centers. The Melody Club was created to give adults with developmental disabilities an opportunity to meet once a month to dance and develop friendships. As a result of her dedication and hard work, she was acknowledged by the MCARC for her service working with developmentally disabled adults. Ruthmae also helped organize the first Indiana Special Olympics. It brought Ruthmae much joy working with children at Colonial Village Daycare. She also enjoyed spending time with her family including children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She still enjoyed attending sporting events with her family dressed in blue jeans and tennis shoes. Ruthmae also enjoyed sewing and other crafts. Ruthmae was a member of St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church.
Ruthmae will be greatly missed by those who survive her: Children Donald V and Sherry R. Bennett; grandchildren Terry Bayt (Dan), Patty Kent (Jim), Diane Bradford (Matt), Cathy Ruchaj (John), Andy Bennett (Kim); and great grandchildren: Demetria, Paul, Whitney, Heather, Tim, A.J., Chelsea, and Shannon. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Bennett, Sr., her son Harold "Sonny" Bennett, Jr., her daughter-in-law Roberta Bennett, and Howard B. "Mac" McClain.
A mass of the Resurrection will be held Tuesday April 9, 2013 at noon at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 1870 W. Oak, Zionsville. Visitation will be from 10 am until time of service. A burial will follow services at Salem Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Ruthmae may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 50 E. 91st Suite 100 Indianapolis, IN 46240.
