Ruth Catherine Sgroi

December 13, 1923 — September 22, 2022

Indianapolis

Ruth Catherine Sgroi was born on December 13, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was second generation German-American and her mother was second generation Irish-American. Ruth was the middle child of twelve born to Joseph and Mary Joering. She is survived by her brother James Joering (Lillian) and her sister Carol Wimberg. On March 17, 1951, Ruth married William Allen (deceased) and was absolutely devoted as a mother and the quintessential post WWII wife with five children – laboring each long day to care for her family in Indianapolis – the first up in the morning and the last to bed each night – with never a day off. She took great joy in her children – and in later years her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. After raising her family, Ruth worked as an executive secretary for many years at the Indianapolis Glove Company and was active as a volunteer for Fairbanks Hospital. She demonstrated well the work ethic and optimism of her generation. She was a faithful and lifelong member of the Catholic Church, initially at St. Andrews, then at St. Lawrence, and more recently at St. Simon. She took her fitness seriously and for years was a member of the YWCA where she enjoyed swimming and aerobic exercise. On August 29, 1981 Ruth married Salvatore Anthony Sgroi (Tony), with whom she enjoyed many adventures and activities. Over the years she also enjoyed reading, dancing to Big Band music, playing bridge, listening to classical music, Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Welk, Saturday night dinners at MCL after 5:00 Mass, excursions and visits with her children, hosting family holiday celebrations, and celebrating birthdays. Ruth passed on September 22, 2022, at the age of 98. She is survived by her faithful husband of 41 years, Tony Sgroi, her children, Carol Allen, Mary Kay Morgan (Dan), Bill Allen (Cheryl), Julie Christiansen, and Frances Sebring (Les), and her seven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She is remembered as a true matriarch – an engaged mother/grandmother/great grandmother who continually prayed for her family, yearned to see good life choices, and never tired of visits. Flowers are welcome however, in lieu of flowers, if any so choose, the family asks that donations be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 476 Riddle Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45220 or https://www.wesharegiving.org/app/giving/weshare-1766.
