Ruth C. Lamb

January 25, 1933 — November 27, 2014

Ruth C. Lamb, 81, of Indianapolis, died Thursday, November 27, 2014. She was born January 25, 1933 in Indianapolis and lived there all her life. Ruth worked for the Indianapolis Public School System's Purchasing Department in secretarial positions. Upon retiring from full-time status at IPS, her job was re-classified for the purpose of allowing her to return the next week as a part-time employee. In the 1950's, her first job was with a prestigious retailer and she was soon given her own counter to manage. Later she worked at Fort Benjamin Harrison in the secretarial typing pool and eventually became a supervisor. She was a 17-year-old graduate of Warren Central High School and was her class salutatorian. Before graduation, she was offered an office job with the FBI in its Washington, DC headquarters, but turned it down in order to stay in Indianapolis with her family. Music was always an important part of Ruth's life. She played alto clarinet in the school band, and was the pianist at Franklin Road Baptist Church for 24 years. After joining Calvary Temple of Indianapolis (now The Caring Place), Ruth played piano for her small group's weekly home meetings. Other things she enjoyed were sewing, cooking, making handcrafts, and playing euchre. One of her crocheted afghans won a county fair blue ribbon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Gerald Lamb, and three sisters. Survivors include her sons, Benjamin N. Lamb and Douglas A. (Beth) Lamb; her grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Lamb; her sister, Judy Moser-Peterson; her sister-in-law, Barbara Lamb; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Monday, December 1 from 4-8 PM at Flanner and Buchanan - Memorial Park, 9350 E. Washington Street. Services will be on Tuesday, December 2 at 1 PM, with calling from 11 AM until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to CurePSP, 30 E. Padonia Road, Suite 201, Timonium, MD 21093 (www.psp.org) or the American Diabetes Association of Indiana, 8604 Allisonville Road, Suite 140, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46250. The family would like to thank American Village and Premier Hospice for providing Ruth with loving care. The family would also like to thank Ruth's neighbors, Ron & Charlotte Dyer, and her long-time friend and former co-worker, Ina Sue Kuhn, for generously helping her and the family.
