Russell Romine

Russell M. Romine died on April 28, 2014 at IU North Hospital. He was born on August 18, 1924 in Bloomington, Indiana to Robert O. Romine and H. Merline Dalton Romine, both deceased. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Robert D. and Edward E. Romine. Mr. Romine served in the Army Air Force during World War II after graduating from Army Air Force Technical School in Ft. Logan, CO. Mr. Romine was a proud graduate of Kelly School of Business at Indiana University and retired as Public Relations at AT&T after 34 years of loyal service. He was a member of American Legion Burton Woolery Post #18 and served as American Legion 7th District Adjutant; Masonic Lodge #22; Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine; Member of Alpha Iota Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity; Indiana University Hoosier Hundred; Life member of IU Alumni Association and served as an elected member of the Indiana University Alumni Council. Memberships included charter member of Indianapolis Skyline Club; Special Olympic Board of Directors; Mayor's Advisory Council on the Disability during Mayor Hudnut's terms; Indianapolis 500 Festival Board of Directors from 1967 to 1973, serving a term as Secretary of the Board of Directors and was the 500 Festival Parade Chairmen for 3 years. In addition he served on one of the early Christmas of the Circle Committees. While serving on the committee for Indianapolis Clean City he helped create the Hudnut Hook Advertisement. Always a big sports fan, he served on the Pan Am Games representing Indiana Bell and also served on behalf of his company for the first Yuletide at Indianapolis Symphony. He was a member of Jaycees in Evansville, IN and chaired committee that sponsored fundraiser starring James Arness and Dale Robertson at Roberts Stadium. Russ was representative of Indiana Bell for the appearance of President Reagan in Mooresville, IN. He had served as Foreman of a Grand Jury for Southern District of Indiana. His membership also include Meridian Hills Country Club and Meridian Street United Methodist Church, where Russ had served on the church's Board of Trustees. He was a loyal fan of IU Basketball and Football holding season tickets for the last 60 years and a season ticket holder of Colts from very first Indianapolis game. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley, and sons, Brad Lewis; Spencer Cole and Rob Russell Romine (Gail); grandchildren Jourdan Christine Romine, Jacob Tyler Romine, Russell Cole Romine and Marie Kathleen Romine; sister-in-law, Sherry Cole Sykora; nieces, Kelli Smith Abdon and Nicole Kristin Smith. A proud, dignified man who never boasted nor bragged but above all Russ was a loving family man who will be sorely missed. Family wishes to express their deep appreciation to his primary physician, Dr. John R. Schaefer, Dr. Duncan Brindley, cardiologist, and Pastors Jen Gibbs and Anne Rosebrock from Meridian Street United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian St., followed by memorial services at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow the memorial service in the Parlor of the church. Graveside Services and Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Bloomington, IN on Friday, May 2, 2014. In lieu of Flowers Donation can be made to Indiana University Foundation or Meridian Street United Methodist Church. Arrangements entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple.
