Ruby Cassady

March 7, 1919 — December 19, 2014

Ruby Louise Cassady and John Leroy Cassady December 19, 2014 was the last day in the long and wonderful lives of John L Cassady and Ruby L Cassady. Ruby died in the middle of the afternoon and John followed four and one-half hours later. They were residents in Clear Water Commons, an independent and assisted living facility in Indianapolis. John and Ruby celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary on November 24, 2014. Ruby was 95 years old; she was born March 7, 1919 in Rossville, Indiana. Her parents were Charles and Dora (Sharp) Hodson of Rossville. Her parents were farmers and she loved growing up on the farm. Ruby met John when they moved next door to his family in West Lafayette. Ruby was a fourteen-year employee of American United Life Insurance. She, with her husband John, were active in the Scottish Rite and the Shriners. They were long-time members of Fairview Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. John and Ruby spent many summer vacations, with their family, in Minocqua Wisconsin where they loved to fish and bask in the beauty of the north woods. Ruby looked to her savior Jesus Christ in all walks of her life; her love for Him, her family and dear friends, sustained her through many years of illnesses. She loved gardening, volunteering at their church, her bridge groups, reading, entertaining, vacationing and making lots of cherry and apple pies from their backyard trees. John was 20 days away from being 100 years old. He was born January 9, 1915 in Battle Gound, Indiana. His parents were Blaine and Estella (Miller) Cassady of West Lafayette. His younger brother, Robert, died in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. John was a 1938 Mechanical Engineering graduate of Purdue and held several jobs prior to his long-time employment at the Link Belt bearing plant on Rockville Road where he was in charge of cost estimation. He retired from Link Belt in 1978 after 40 years with the company. He was active in the Masons, Scottish Rite and the Shriners where he sang in the Chanters, their choral group, for many years. John loved to sing and was in some sort of organized singing group for approximately 80 years. He also loved to hunt, fish, play cards and visit with his family and friends. John and Ruby have two surviving children, Bonnie (Richard) Garrett and a son Charles. They have two grandchildren Laura (Garrett) Abell, (Alex Abell) and John Garrett (Angel). There are four great-grandchildren Ethan Abell, Claire Abell, Rebecca Garrett and Aaron Garrett. The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to pastor Carrie Coons, Clearwater Commons, Clover Caregivers, Alpha Care, Premier Hospice and Grace at Home for their excellent care. A memorial service for lives well lived will be held at Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple. Calling will begin at noon with the service at 2 pm on Friday, January 9, 2015. Internment will be at Washington Park North Cemetery; this will be family only. In lieu of flowers you can send memorial donations to Fairview Presbyterian Church (4609 N Capitol Ave, Indy 46208). All contributions will be much appreciated.
