Rowena Hydu

June 3, 1923 — June 17, 2012

Rowena "June" Urey Hydu, 89, passed away June 17 at the Forum in Indianapolis after a brief illness. She was born June 3, 1923 in Greenville, Pennsylvania, the only daughter and youngest child of James Edward Urey, Sr. and Ethel Regina Wiesen Urey. June graduated from Mercer High School, Mercer, PA, in 1942. She worked at Camp Reynolds, a personnel replacement depot for the ETO (the European Theater of Operations) in World War II. During its short existence over one million men passed through the camp. She then worked at the former Cooper-Bessemer engine plant in Grove City, PA. June married Peter B. Hydu, April 24, 1948. Pete preceded her in death, May 7, 2000. They settled in Mercer, PA where they had three daughters, Marcia "Marci" Richards and Roberta "Robbi" Hydu both of Indianapolis and Cynthia "Cinni" Kerr of Oldsmar, FL. June spent many hours chauffeuring the girls to various dance and music lessons, parades for the Fredonia Polka Dots and activities at Mercer High School, sewing costumes for recitals, being an assistant Girl Scout leader and many other activities involving the girls. June also found time to be a member of the Mercer Junior Women's Club and was a lifetime member of the Mercer Order of the Eastern Star #180. The family moved to Indianapolis in 1966 where June continued the chauffeuring activities to lessons at Butler University and activities at North Central High school. She worked at Ayres Glendale for several years in the men's department. She and Pete moved to Clearwater, FL in 1981 where they finally retired in 1986. Although they had both always enjoyed listening to "good" music and dancing, it was after Pete's retirement, that they finally found the time to fully enjoy that activity. June returned to Indianapolis in 2004. She became an avid Butler basketball fan, attending most of the home games until her illness. She still watched the games on TV and listened to the broadcasts. She is survived by her daughters, one granddaughter, Colette Nicole Kerr Wells (George), a great-grandson, George Ethan Wells, born June 6, 2012, a dear sister-in-law, Mary Rinamon Urey, nephews, Gerald "Jerry" S. Urey (Judy), Chicago, John W. Urey (Amy), Greenville, Pa, and Richard "Dick" Urey (Sandy), Mercer, Pa, seven great nephews and nieces, and nine great-great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers, James E. Urey, Jr, William Howard Urey and John Kenneth Urey and a nephew James E. Urey III. A memorial service will be held in Mercer, PA at a later date and she will be laid to rest with her husband at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Hermitage, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Butler University Men's Basketball Team or to the Home for Friendless Animals, 7649 W. 200 S., Waynetown, IN 47990.
