Ross E. Meyer, age 87, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Ross was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Chester C. and Ethel M. (Mack) Meyer. He was the youngest of five children—four boys and one girl—and often reminisced fondly about childhood summers spent on his aunt and uncle’s farm. He grew up on the north side of Indianapolis, attending School #21, where he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Ross graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1956.
Ross enjoyed a long and successful career in the life insurance industry as an information systems analyst, eventually earning a promotion to Vice President. His work introduced him to many valued colleagues at Jefferson National Insurance, College Life Insurance, and, until his retirement, Indianapolis Life Insurance. One of those colleagues became the love of his life. Surrounded by family and friends, Ross married Bernice (Burton) on July 15, 1961, at Greenwood First Baptist Church. Together, they shared 62 devoted years of marriage before Bernice’s passing on June 9, 2024. During their life together, Ross and Bernice raised three daughters, traveled extensively throughout the United States, cherished time with family and friends, and fully embraced retirement.
Ross was a loving father to Sheryl Meyer, Patty Miller, and Cindy Carson, and a fun-loving father-in-law to Jon Miller and Terry Carson. He adored his grandchildren, Brianna, William, and Zachary Carson, and was a proud grandpa-in-law to Meghan and Emily. He was especially excited to welcome a great-grandchild, expected in April to William and Meghan. Ross was also a beloved uncle to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, always ready with a warm smile and a good joke.
A devoted church volunteer throughout his life, Ross found joy in giving back to his community. He served faithfully as a deacon, altar server, missions team leader, Sunday school teacher, and in many other roles wherever help was needed. In his free time, he enjoyed birdwatching and identifying local species. Ross also loved traveling—by plane or by road—visiting historical landmarks, museums, and memorable restaurants across the country. One of his favorite destinations was Hawaii, where he delighted in the natural beauty, culture, and breathtaking scenery he experienced alongside his wife and friends.
Ross was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernice; his parents; his siblings Chet and Betty, Robert and Evelyn, Ralph and Marge, and June and Paul; and his in-laws Roy, Barbara, and Dennis.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan – Hamilton Memorial Park (Prairie Waters), 4180 Westfield Road, Westfield, Indiana 46062. A funeral service will follow immediately at 12:00 p.m., with a formal procession afterward to Ross’s final resting place at Crown Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions in Ross’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
