Rose Marie Grable

August 8, 1933 — May 12, 2026

Indianapolis, Indiana

Rose Marie Grable, 92, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, at her home. She was born on August 8, 1933, to Charles and Freida Stewart in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was a graduate of Garfield High School in Terre Haute, Indiana, Class of 1952. She married Franklin Donald Grable in 1954 and had three children.

Rose worked for the director of the Warren County Welfare Department in Williamsport Indiana before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she worked as a secretary to the director of the Parks Department. Rose worked to put her husband Don through college so he could fulfill his dream of being a teacher. After teaching, Don became involved in ISTA and NEA which enabled Rose to retire so she could fulfill her dream of devoting her care and love to her family.

Rose was a wonderful caregiver who, at the age of fourteen, helped to take care of her mother who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while giving birth to her youngest child, Mary Ann. She cared for her mother and father, mother-in-law and her aunt during the final stages of their lives.

Rose loved to babysit for her grandchildren and took care of her son’s four children for a year while he was stationed overseas in the United States Air Force.

Rose volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader. She loved the outdoors and making crafts. She also volunteered for Saint Vincent de Paul.

Rose loved her faith and her church, making sure her children grew up knowing God and His Golden Rule; “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Rose loved her home and keeping it clean for all to enjoy. Every holiday and special event was celebrated with family and friends at her home.

Rose enjoyed her family vacations, driving and camping across the United States. She loved the beauty of the world from the mountains to the oceans. When her husband retired, they enjoyed traveling with their friends. Rose always said her two favorite places were Hawaii and Alaska.

Rose loved playing cards and Dominoes with her friends. She spent many hours sitting in her favorite chair reading, and oh, how she loved a good book. Rose had a beautiful garden and yard. She loved watching the birds and squirrels.

Rose is survived by her three children; Donald M. (Mary) Grable of West Lafayette, Indiana, Karen A. (Mike) Mansfield of Reelsville, Indiana, and Teresa L. (Doug) Hvidston of Indianapolis, Indiana. She is also survived by five grandsons; Tony, Michael, Jason, Stewart and Erik, two granddaughters; Michelle and Carissa, a step-granddaughter Kristin, nine great grandchildren; Jada, Michael, Madison, Vayla, Raylee, J-Michael, Mykah, Cash, and Laya, a brother, Charles (Jane) Stewart, and a sister, Sr. Mary Ann Stewart.
