Roscoe ("Ross") W. Drake, 98, passed away March 11, 2012 in Lebanon, IN. Ross was born December 30, 1913 in Shelby County, Indiana and lived in Carmel, Indiana since 1977. Prior to that, he and his late wife Candace owned and operated Ross Drake Stables in Hartland, WI for nearly 20 years.
Ross' entire career was devoted to training American Saddlebred show horses, and the Wisconsin stable was well respected in the Milwaukee area. He was hugely successful in training show horses as well as teaching their owners to ride, show, and enjoy the world of Saddlebreds.
Ross and Candace created a horsemanship school that grew over the years. The school provided lessons, summer camps, and special riding events for many people of all ages in the Milwaukee area during those years. The legacy of Ross Drake's love of American Saddlebred horses will be remembered by many people for a long, long time.
Ross was a member of the Carmel United Methodist Church, the Millersville Masonic Lodge #126 F & A.M. and the Scottish Rite. He is survived by a son, Michael R. (Marsha) Drake, one sister-in-law (Betty Drake), a brother-in-law (Ernie Brewer), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Candace, sisters Thelma and Verna, and brothers Hiram, Curtis Amos, Emerson, and Wilford.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 7:00 PM at Flanner and Buchanan- Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN. Visitation will be from 5:30 PM until service time. Cremation burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Bloomington, IN.
