Ronald Leigh Schwanke, 80, passed away peacefully at his home on July 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and dear friends.
Born on June 12, 1946, Ron was lovingly raised by Frank and Beulah Schwanke in Chicago, Illinois and Northern Indiana. Ron lived a life defined by service, creativity, faith, and devotion to those he loved. He proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Army, carrying the values of leadership, integrity, and commitment throughout his life.
Ron found joy in many pursuits that reflected his curious mind and artistic spirit. He was an avid golfer in retirement, who appreciated time spent on the course with his sons or friends. He expressed his creativity through his water color paintings, many of which he delighted to gift to others. He and his beloved wife, Joan, shared a love of travel, creating treasured memories together throughout the years. He also enjoyed challenging himself with mind puzzles, crafting intricate dollar-bill origami, and spending time with friends around the bridge table.
A man of quiet generosity, Ron volunteered at his local food pantry, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Even after losing much of his mobility, he continued his service there, faithfully sorting donated toilet paper and other essentials for families in need. His Lutheran faith, nurtured through his membership at Holy Cross Lutheran Church and his years of singing in the church choir, provided him with strength, guidance, and a deep sense of community.
Above all, Ron cherished his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Joan; his sons, Brian (Karen), Christopher (Nancy, of blessed memory), Ronald Jr. (Emily), and Philip; and his 14 beloved grandchildren: Abbie, Alex, Briana, Brittany, CJ, Daniel, Emma, Erin, Evan, Jake, Lexi, Maddie, Thomas and Tina, along with many extended family members, friends, and all who were fortunate to know him. His kindness, wisdom, gentle humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In keeping with Ron’s gentle sense of humor, the family notes that while he will be deeply missed by those who loved him, the many geese that shared the pond near his home may feel otherwise.
Ron leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, creativity, and faith. May his memory be a blessing to all whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation in Ron’s honor.
Visitation for Ron will take place 2:00pm on Monday July 20, 2026, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 8115 Oaklandon Road, Indianapolis, IN 46236. with funeral services at 3:00pm. Burial will take place the following day at Washington Park East Cemetery.
