Ronald L Pollard, 83, of Indianapolis, passed away March 14th, 2024. He was born on Christmas Day, 1940, in Indianapolis to parents Walter and V. Maxine (Hook) Pollard.
Ron proudly served his country in the United States Navy for nearly 11 years; joining when he was just 17. Among other vessels, he served on the destroyer USS Dahlgren and the icebreaker USS Edisto and remained an active member of their respective associations until the day he passed. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal twice, the Antarctica Service Medal twice, and the National Defense Service Medal. Prior to leaving the Navy, he worked towards and received his GED from Arsenal Technical High School in October 1968.
Upon leaving the Navy in 1969, Ron began working as an air traffic controller at Weir Cook Municipal Airport which was renamed to Indianapolis International Airport in 1976. He retired in 1988.
On March 26, 1997, Ron married his wife Connie. They shared 20 beautiful years together, until Connie passed away on July 3, 2017.
Ron was a strong, loving gentleman with a great sense of humor. He was an animal lover who enjoyed the company of a variety of dogs, cats, birds and koi over the years. He enjoyed his family, fishing, cooking, traveling, golfing, local sports, indoor gardening, and he was a voracious reader. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Ron is survived by his children Niki (Eric) Rembold, Ron J. (Cathy) Pollard, and Shelly (Tom) Welch; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; his sisters Marsha (Tom) Merrick, Darlene (Leonard) White, and Debra (Charles) Schrump; and his beloved toy poodle, Cassi.
Ron is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Connie; and his sister Susie Benge.
Visitation for Ron will be May 24th, at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East, from 12-2pm. His memorial service will begin at 2pm followed by a short grave-side service prior to his being laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.
