The Reverend Doctor Roger Lee Dean, age 74, of Morgantown, Indiana passed away, after a brave struggle with pancreatic cancer, joining his beloved son Douglas Dean in heaven, on March 8, 2011. He was born on April 9, 1936, in Wetmore, Kansas, to Claude L. and Della Olive (Spiker) Dean. Roger moved to Indiana at one year of age.
Roger graduated High School from the Charlestown High school Indiana. Roger received a Bachelors Degree in History and Political Science from Berea College, in Berea Kentucky, a Masters of Divinity from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville Kentucky and a Doctoral Degree of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, Ill.
On August 15, 1959, Roger married Beverly Smith in Lenoir City, Tennessee.
Roger began his distinguished life of service as a Student Minster at the Oak Grove and Scipio Presbyterian Churches in 1959. Roger was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Branch Indiana from 1963 to 1971. He was the pastor of John Knox Presbyterian Church from 1971 to 2000 and also served as the Speedway Fire and Police Chaplain for 27 years.
After retiring in 2000, Roger helped with a new church development, at the Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship, in Nashville, Indiana. Roger retired again in 2002.
In September of 1998, Roger received the Inspector General 33rd Degree by the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry (commonly known as the Scottish Rite). The 33rd Degree is conferred on members who have made major contributions to society.
Roger is survived by his wife, Beverly Dean, his son, Brian Dean and wife Gail, and a sister, Betty Hensley and husband, Beryl.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Donald Dean, and son, Douglas Allan Dean.
A Memorial service will be held at the Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship, in Nashville Indiana, on Friday March 18th, with visitation at 3:00pm followed by the service at 5:00pm. A Funeral service will be held on March 19th, 2011 at John Knox Presbyterian Church, in Speedway Indiana, with visitation at 12:00pm followed by the service at 2:30pm. A private interment will follow on Monday March 21st, 2011, at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations are made to: Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship, in Nashville Indiana, or the charity of your choice.
