Roger Alan Myers

October 22, 1936 — March 25, 2023

Indianapolis, IN

Roger Alan Myers, 86, passed away peacefully at his Indianapolis home into the arms of Jesus on March 25, 2023.  He will be missed by his loving wife, Thelma Myers; sister, Donna Minnick; children, Brian Myers (Karen), Tracy Venable (David), and Gary Myers; grandchildren, Michelle Morgan (Erick), Kerry Carr (Connor), Ben Myers, and Casey Venable; and two great grandchildren.

He was a devoted Christian and over 50-year member of Heather Hills Baptist Church. There he dedicated much of his life as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, church bus driver, maintenance man, and sports coach. He loved his church family and Senior Group and supported them in many ways through the years.

Roger was born in South Bend, Indiana, to Esther and Joe Myers. His parents moved to Indianapolis in 1939 and he lived there for the entirety of his life. Roger graduated from Warren Central High School in 1955 and was a member of FFA and the football team. He remained life-long friends with many of his high school buddies and met them for lunch over the years. He attended Warren football games into his 80s and received an award from them acknowledging his support.

Roger joined the Army in 1958 and then the National Guard where he served as a Military Police Officer. He loved America and always said it was the best country in the world.  He greatly respected all military service members, firemen, and police.

The majority of Roger’s career was in repairs and construction at Community Hospital East. He was very adept at construction, wall papering and painting and took great pride in his work. He also enjoyed collecting, photography, and scrapbooking. He kept all his mementos and proudly displayed them in his collection room.

Roger took his love of photography on the road with Thelma where they reveled in traveling to National Parks, all places in the West, and lots of day trips around Indiana.   He thoroughly enjoyed people and always had a smile on his face and a silly joke to share. He never met a stranger and struck up conversations easily.   He was quite the prankster as a kid…much to the chagrin of his sister who sometimes got blamed for his shenanigans.

As Roger transitioned into needing more intensive care, especially in the final year, Thelma provided tremendous personal sacrifice to ensure Roger was cared for, loved, and comfortable until his final days.

Roger was a devoted son and his mother loved him immensely. His final tribute to her are the pink carnations he selected for the flowers on his casket. He would want everyone to know that he is in a better place with her and Jesus. He frequently spoke of heaven and its beauty and peace. Dad, we will see you there some day.

Roger’s funeral will be on Friday, March 31, 2023, at Heather Hills Baptist Church, 1421 N. German Church Road, Indianapolis with visitation at 10 am and service at 11 am, followed by entombment at Washington Park East Cemetery. Contributions can be made in his memory to Community Health Network – Hospice.
