Rodney Frank Smith
72, passed away on August 22, 2012, in Carmel, Indiana.
He was born on March 2, 1940, in Whitewater, Wisconsin. He worked on his family farm and graduated from Whitewater High School, where he was student body president and played on the state championship football team. After high school he joined the Navy. Upon completion of service in the Navy he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1963, with a Bachelors degree in Accounting. He was member of Sigma Tau fraternity. While attending college he met Jean Andreoli, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and they were married on August 17, 1963. They had celebrated 49 years of marriage prior to his passing.
Rodney earned his CPA and was employed in various financial positions, including VP Precision Extrusions, and CFO, VP Finance of Knauf Fiberglass, 1978–1989. He was also a private entrepreneur, until his retirement in 2001. During his career the family moved from the Chicago suburbs, to Shelbyville, Indiana, and back to the Chicago suburbs, and finally to Carmel, Indiana in retirement. In his retirement Rodney began his second career as a professional volunteer. He volunteered his services for many different organizations including AARP, USO, Indiana State Museum, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Kiwanis Club Toymakers, and Hamilton County Election Judge. He also traveled the country on many disaster missions for the American Red Cross. His hobbies over the years included being the owner and pilot of a small airplane; amateur photographer, building his own dark room; and woodworking. Rodney and his wife loved to travel. They traveled all over the US and made several visits to Europe and Asia. He was an American history buff, and avid reader. He was also a huge sports fan and loved to watch Notre Dame Football, Cubs Baseball, Indiana Pacers, and Bears & Colts games. He was a devoted Grandfather and supported and attended all his grandchildren's' sporting events, spelling bees, concerts, and other school events.
He will be missed greatly by his family. He is survived by his wife Jean (Andreoli) Smith; his two daughters, Deanne (Clark) Lienemann of Indianapolis, and Jill (Mark) Foster of Westfield. He is also survived by five adoring grandchildren: Rachel Lienemann, 17, Will Lienemann 15, Joseph Foster, 13, Gianna Foster, 10, and John Foster, 9.
Services for Rodney are as follows: Friends may call Friday, August 24, 2012 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at Flanner & Buchanan, 325 E. Carmel Drive, in Carmel. Funeral services Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 10 AM, with Military Honors at Flanner & Buchanan, with entombment to follow at Our Lady of Peace cemetery.
