Robert L. Young Sr.

Mr. Robert “Bob” Young, 84, passed away August 17th, 2026. He was born July 7th, 1942, in Indianapolis to parents Floyd and Agnes Young.

Bob grew up in Indy and moved around the city as a young man. He attended George Washington High, Lawrence Central, and graduated from Arsenal Tech.

In high school, he met the love of his life, Joyce Moit. They married on April 27th, 1963, and shared 63 dedicated years together.

He was a self-made man coming from poverty. He worked many jobs and wore many hats. After completing his insurance licensing, Bob sold insurance for several years before establishing his own insurance agency. He took some beloved people under his wing helping them into the insurance business.

He and Joyce were loyal members of the Free Methodist Church for over 60 years. His faith was paramount in his life. He always took the opportunity to ask people that crossed his path if they knew Jesus. He knew that having a personal relationship with Jesus was the most important part of life. He took the time to teach Sunday school, preach and minister at nursing homes, and lead morning breakfast prayer meetings.

Bob was dedicated to what he did. He had a passion for softball, which was passed on to his daughters and granddaughters. He started coaching his daughters, then moved on to coaching at many local high schools and then at the University of Indianapolis. He managed and coached a travel team and helped many girls get scholarships for college. He told his athletes about Jesus and had devotions and prayers with them.

He and Joyce enjoyed traveling and mission trips, visiting Rome, Hawaii, Haiti, and more. In their early years many nights were spent square dancing or bowling in leagues with his children in tow.

Bob loved his family. You didn’t need to share blood to be part of his family.

He is survived by his wife Joyce; his children Robert (Julie) Young Jr., Regine (Jeff) Stotts, and Teresa (Chirs) Hemphill; grandchildren Lauren McCormick, James Young, Spencer Young, Taylor Swan, Aaron Young, Brett Stotts, Hope Stotts, and Jacob Stotts; Holly Clark, Natalie Clark, Jake Hemphill, and Emerson Hemphill; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers James E. Young and John Young; sisters Sandy Young and Susie Humphrey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Floyd “Bill”, and sister Mary, great granddaughters Kinsley and Alayna.

Visitation for Bob will be Tuesday August 25th at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East from 6-8pm. Additional visitation will be Wednesday August 26th, from 1-2pm, with his funeral service beginning at 2pm. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.
