Robert McCallister ofSpeedway, Indiana, passed away suddenly on May 9, 2016, at the age of 95. Hewas a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.Born on July 17, 1920, in Tell City, Indiana, he grew up on an 80 acre farm inPerry County. Through his characteristic determination and hard work, he rose fromattending a one-room school to graduating from Indiana University on August 22,1943 with a Bachelor of Science in Business. After joining the ROTC and graduatingfrom Officer’s Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, he reported for activeduty as 2nd Lieutenant to the 9th Infantry Division,Company B, 1st Platoon, in France during World War ll. Leading hisplatoon in battle on the front lines, he was wounded three times and earned aPurple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He ended his military service with therank of Captain. Following World War ll he began working as an accountant atJ.D Adams, which subsequently became Westinghouse Airbrake Company, inIndianapolis on January 21, 1946. He married Esther Jeanette Binkley fromBloomington, Indiana, on April 21, 1946 and the two of them moved to Speedway,Indiana where they lived for the 70 years of their marriage. He retired asComptroller from the same company after 38 years. He loved gardening andlandscaping and for the next 18 years he painstakingly cared for the propertyof Paul E. Smith Company where he was known as Daddy Bob. But most of all, heenjoyed helping his family any way he could. He was preceded in death by hisparents, William Sherman and Nellie Belle (Chilton) McCallister, his brothers,Russell and Clarence McCallister, and his sisters Mabel Horman, Edith Harmonand Hazel Sawka. He is survived by his wife Esther Binkley McCallister, hischildren Jane M. Smith, (Denny Smith) and Dr. Robert E. McCallister (SandyHutchison McCallister) his grandchildren Andrew P. Smith (Melissa), MaryMcCallister Carver (Adam), Rachel McCallister and his great-grandchildren Jonahand Maren Smith and Natalie Carver. The family would like to thank specialfriends and caregivers, Becki Schooley, Kathi Glenn and Norine Chastain. MemorialContributions can be made to Speedway Christian Church. Funeral Service will beFriday May 13, 2016 at Flanner and Buchanan-Speedway at 11:00am with callingone hour prior to service. Burial at Crown Hill Cemetery.
