ROBERT LEWIS “BOB” SCHERB

Bob was born June 23, 1937 in New York City, New York, to Von Barber Scherb and Marthadeane Lesher Scherb Ward. His father was a musician, playing with several dance bands in the Big Apple. When World War Two broke out, the family, along with number one sister – Nancy Grace, returned to Indianapolis. Von then worked at Allison’s for the duration.

Bob graduated from Shortridge High School, in the Class of 1955. He joined the US Navy that fall, and became an Ironman, serving on an all-wooden mine sweeper. Upon his release from active duty, he married his high school sweetheart, Ann Ader, on November 3, 1957.

Bob and Ann were blessed with three children: Cynthia Kay (Steve) Grimes, David Alan (Diane) Scherb, and Amy Diane (Ed) Gray, and seven wonderful grand children: Jacob, Jessica, Jamie, and Jaci Scherb, and Peter, Thomas, and Caroline Gray.

Bob had a varied work career that included positions at Personal Finance, Household Finance Insurance, and The Equitable of New York, all of which lead to a long career in transportation and logistics, with American Art Clay Company, RCA, ProTrans International, and Roche Diagnostics.

Bob created the first sidewalk chalk – “Mr. Chalky” and brought it to market.

Bob has been active with the Boy Scouts for over 45 years, serving as a Cub Master, Scout Master, Northeast District Chairman, and most recently, he was a Member of the Tuesday Crew at Camp Belzer.

Bob received the Northeast District Award of Merit in 1986, and the Council Silver Beaver Award in 1989. In August of 2005, Bob designed and was assisted in building, the Firecrafter Plaza at Camp Belzer, which commemorated the 85th Anniversary of Firecrafter, founded by Chief F.O. Belzer. Much to his surprise, Bob received the coveted Minisino Firecrafter Award at the Firecrafter Plaza Dedication Ceremony.

Bob is a former member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, and the Eastwood Neighborhood Association.

He is survived by his wife Ann, of 58 years, his children and grandchildren, and his three sisters – Nancy Rush, Sue Ann Yoder and Carolyn Kendall, along with many nieces and nephews.
