Richard Lovelady

September 6, 1933 — March 23, 2011

Richard A. Lovelady 77, Indianapolis, died March 22, 2011. A native of Kentucky, he was an Ogden scholar and a graduate of Western Kentucky University. He taught secondary and preparatory school in the Florida and Kentucky systems. He spent several years in the insurance industry, retiring in 1978. After retirement, he spent much of his time as a volunteer advisor to Veteran’s organizations and their members. He served in the U.S. Naval Air Service and several other National Defense Services. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He was an honorary life member, thrice-potent Commander of Broad Ripple American Legion Post 3 and its long time Finance Officer. He was the editor of the “Broad Ripple Bulletin” for many years, writing a popular column, “My View”. He was twice Commander of the Benjamin Harrison V. F. W. post, a Past Cheminot of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, and a Past President of the General Memorial Association of Marion County. He served the Roudabush and Cold Springs Veteran’s Hospital and received the Distinguished Service Award from Central States Hospital while Adjutant of the 11th District of the American Legion. He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel on the staff of Governor Brereton C. Jones for his services to Veterans. He was a member of the Anglican Church in America. Mr. Lovelady was a high Freemason and served his home lodge, Millersville F&AM #126, as its Treasurer for many years, receiving its highest award in 2006. He was a Knight Templar of the York Rite, a Prince of the Scottish Rite, a Prophet of the Sahara Grotto, and a Noble of the Murat Shrine, Legion of Honor and Police Club. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Joyce Spence Lovelady. Service will be 11:00 am Monday, March 28, 2011 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Broad Ripple with calling Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Entombment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
