Richard Lee Bennett was born May 8, 1924 in Indianapolis, IN to the late Archie and Minerva Charleston-Bennett.
Richard was educated through the Indianapolis Public School System and attended the historic Crispus Attucks High School.
Richard was united with St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church at an early age.
Upon completion of school, Richard was inducted into the United States Army spending time as an airplane engine mechanic and a crew chief on the B-25 Light Bombers. When his time of service was completed, he received an honorable discharge and returned home.
Richard met Ruth Marie Garrett in 1943 and fell in love. After a three month romance the two united in marriage on July 8th. Their love produced one son, Richard Darryl Bennett. They lived together in holy matrimony for 56 years until God called Ruth home in 1999.
Richard retired from the Indianapolis Water Company after 38 years and five months of service. Retiring allowed him to spend more time doing what he loved: golfing and bowling. He was a member of the Jubilee Bowl and numerous other bowling leagues, played golf at Douglass Golf course and was a part of the “Goofy Golfers” traveling golf club. In his neighborhood he was lovingly known as the “bicycle mechanic”. Children would bring their broken bikes to him to be repaired.
God saw that the road for him was getting rough and his hills were hard to climb; after whispering, “I’m okay, nothing hurts, I am alright, I’m good”, he gently closed his eyes on September 24, 2016 and departed this life at the age of 92 years and 4 months.
Richard L. Bennett will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him and leaves to cherish his memory: his only son, Richard Darryl Bennett of Indianapolis, Indiana, two beloved grandchildren, Doron (Anica) Bennett, Sr. of Florence, South Carolina and Sekia A. Bennett, of Houston, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Jones, Ryein Bennett, Doron Bennett, Jr., Kaniya Green and Kaden Green; very special niece, Liz Garnett, niece/daughter, Michelle Marks-Bennett, and a host of other relatives and friends.
