Richard Lewis Allen, who was born and raised in Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the age of 92. He was born on November 14, 1921. Richard graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran having served as a Master Sergeant during World War II in the South Pacific and a member of the Veterans of Foreign War. Richard was a conductor for Penn Central where he worked for 39 years, Realtor for many years and was a member of the United Transportation Union. Richard was very active in charities throughout his lifetime. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Member of the Murat Shrine where he served with the transportation club and volunteered to drive children that were burn victims for treatment. He was also a member of the Oakland Lodge for over 50 years and a member of Moose 17, and Bull Dog Club.
Richard was a positive and inspirational individual and a loving, unselfish and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. One endearing memory his family has is the recollection of Richard waking each morning with a smile on his face and saying "Today is going to be a wonderful day!" He will be dearly missed by his family and friends who knew and loved him. Special thank you to Great Lakes Caring Hospice, and Indiana Masonic Home for their care and support.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Dorothy Hockett Allen; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Billie Jo and Homer Thomason, Gonzales, Louisiana, and Joyce Ann and Michael Cochran, Cumberland, Indiana; 3 grandchildren and their spouses, Michael Goldsmith (Arlene), Patrick Goldsmith (Lana), and Matthew Goldsmith (Joey); 6 great-grandchildren, Connor and Evan Goldsmith, Ethan and Brandon Goldsmith, and Turner and Taylor Goldsmith; sister and brother-in-law Jane and Doug Staley. He is preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Violet Hollingsworth Allen.
Family and Friends may call on Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 10:00am-12:00pm with Funeral Service at 12:00pm Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park East 10722 E. Washington St. Indianapolis, IN. Burial will be held in Washington Park East Cemetery.
