Richard Allen Hutson, M.D., 89, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on May 30, 2026. He was born on July 18, 1936, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to parents, the late Raymond and Irma (Schnitker) Hutson. Richard fell in love with Vivian (Garrison) Hutson in high school and they decided to spend the rest of their lives together. They got married on September 18, 1954, in Coldwater, Michigan. They enjoyed a wonderful 71 years together until his passing.
Raised by his mother after his father’s passing, Richard grew up to appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to life a fulfilling life. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Richard joined the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of 1st Class Hospital Corpsman. During his time in the Navy, Richard and Vivian welcomed their first two children, Debra and Kimberly, into their lives. He was honorably discharged in 1958 and returned home to his growing family. They welcomed their daughter Kathleen not long after.
Richard’s time in the service as a Hospital Corpsman motivated him to go to medical school and pursue this as a career. He graduated from IU School of Medicine in 1965. Richard loved what he did and found a true calling to this field. He was the fifth original doctor at Ortho Indy. He also worked as the team doctor for the Pacers for many years.
In his free time, Richard loved to spend time with family, he also adored a good game of Blackjack or Euchre. In his professional life, Richard was most happy when treating juvenile amputees or teaching medical students as shown by the teacher of the year award he won in 1972.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Vivian Hutson; children, Kimberly (Scott) Hutson, Kathleen (Jeff) Koczenasz; grandchildren, Ashley (Ben) Cochran, Jenny (Joe) VanDeusen, Steve (Hollie) Shively, Tyler Koczenasz, Jordan Koczenasz (fiancée Cami Jones); great-grandchildren, Aiden Michael Sigman, Zephran Cochran, Alanna Cochran, Blakley VanDeusen, and Kenzington VanDeusen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Debbie Shively; grandson, Justin Sigman; and brother, Paul M. Hutson.
Visitation for Richard will be from 12 pm – 2 pm, on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite) – 9700 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250, with a funeral service immediately following at 2 pm.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Camp Crosley YMCA. Donations can be mailed to, Camp Crosley YMCA, 165 EMS T2 Lane, North Webster, IN 46555.
