Richard H. Wenzel

Richard Wenzel 88, of Indianapolis, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died May 30, 2015. Born on September 29, 1926, in Toledo Ohio, he was the only child of the late Gladys and Harold Wenzel. A World War II Navy Corpsman, he served on the USS Chicago – a cruiser stationed in the Pacific. He was part of the occupational forces in Shanghai, China and Japan. He saw Hiroshima one year after its devastation by the atomic bomb. He retired to the U.S. after his service in the Navy and received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Toledo. In 1950 he married the love of his life Joanne Bueschen. They had two sons Rick and Dave. In 1956 the family moved to Indianapolis. He was a dedicated social servant and in the 1960's served as the Executive Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Indiana. He then became the Assistant Director for what was then called the Crippled Children's Welfare Department for the State of Indiana. He served in that role for over 20 years until his retirement. His passions included his family, yard work, going to the family condo in Gulf Shores, Alabama and following all the area sports teams. For over fifty years he was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was recently preceded in death by Joanne, his wife of 64 years. He is survived by his sons; Rick (Mary) Wenzel, and David (Sheri) Wenzel. Seven grandchildren , Richard (Heather) Wenzel, Meredith (Matt) Miller, Macey (Tom) Judd, Erica (Nathan) Branam, Bart (Alisha) Wenzel, Jonathon Wenzel, Carlyanne Wenzel and 10 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2015 from 10:00am at Flanner and Buchanan – Memorial Park, 9350 E. Washington St, with a service at 11:00am. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
