Richard 'Dick' Paul Stein

Richard P. "Dick" Stein went home to the Lord peacefully on December 28, 2014. He was born September 2, 1925 in New Albany, IN to William P. Stein and Lillian Russell Stein. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlotte Key Stein and their children Richard P. Stein Jr, William K. Stein and Patricia A. (Jeff) Stieneker along with their two children Stefanie (Jason) Eadie and Jake Stieneker and great-granddaughter Blaire Eadie. He was preceded in death by his brothers William R. Stein and John E. Stein, and sisters Martha O'Bryan and Ida Lou Hennessy. Upon graduating from New Albany High School in 1943, Dick enlisted in the Navy V-12 Officer Training Program, spending two semesters at Milligan College and two at Duke University. He then went to Midshipman's School at the University of Notre Dame, was then commissioned Ensign and sent to Naval Communications Training at Harvard. From May 1945 to July 1946 he served in Naval Radio Stations on Guam, Subic Bay in the Philippines, and Kwajalein. In June 1950 he graduated from the University of Louisville and Louisville Law School, was admitted to the Indiana Bar, but was recalled to active duty shortly after. During the Korean War as a Lieutenant, he served at a Naval Station in Newport, RI in Communications coding and decoding messages before returning home to New Albany to practice law in 1952. In 1954 and 1958, Dick was elected Prosecuting Attorney for Floyd County. At the age of 35, he was appointed to U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana by President John F. Kennedy. Under Kennedy he received the distinguished honor of being allowed to practice in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. Four years later in 1965 he was reappointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Dick resigned in 1966 and was appointed Chairman of the Indiana Public Service Commission. In 1971 he became Legal Counsel for Eli Lilly and Co. for three years, and then spent 15 years as Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at the Public Service Company of Indiana (now Duke Energy). Dick was named a Sagamore of the Wabash five times by five different Governors. He was a member of the Service Club of Indianapolis and former member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the Columbia Club, the Athletic Club, and Highland Country Club. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing at Plum Creek Country Club where he help start the "Old Fart's Club" and spending time at his family business (Classic Spirits) in Carmel. Dick Stein was loved by many. He was a man of family and faith, and he will always be remembered for the stories that he lived and shared.
