Richard Czap Sr.
December 7, 1943 – May 16, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Czap Sr., age 81, of Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 16, 2025. Rick as his friends and family called him was a beloved father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend whose impact will be felt for generations.
Born on December 7, 1943, Richard grew up in Essexville, Michigan, and attended Bay City Central High School, where he was a standout multi-sport athlete. His athletic excellence earned him numerous state championship honors and later induction into the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame. He went on to play football at the University of Nebraska, followed by professional stints in both the NFL and the CFL.
After his playing days, Richard dedicated his life to education and mentorship. As a longtime teacher with Indianapolis Public Schools, he taught with passion and purpose, also coaching football and wrestling at multiple high schools. Beyond the classroom, he poured his energy into coaching his sons’ youth teams, shaping not only their lives but also those of countless other young athletes.
Richard was a man of many passions. He loved riding his motorcycle, casting a line while fishing, and spending quality time with his family and friends. He was never far from a game, a laugh, or a heartfelt conversation. Through his dedication to coaching, teaching, and leading by example, he helped shape the character of many young men and left an indelible mark on his community.
He is survived by his three sons: Kirk (Stephani), Jason (Ashley), and Rick Jr. (Stacey); his cherished grandchildren: Lena, Alexandra, Beau, and Tyler; his siblings; and countless friends and former students.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park East from 12-4.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nebraska Greats Foundation. This foundation was important to Rick.
Richard Czap Sr. lived a full and meaningful life—one of purpose, generosity, and love. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
