Rex Lyman Willis, age 84, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on March 1, 2026, surrounded by family and friends.
Born on August 9, 1941 in Duggar, Indiana to Cecil and Edith, Rex’s life was shaped by faith and an unwavering love for his family.
He was the beloved husband of Donna for 47 extraordinary years, her best friend, the love of her life, and her greatest adventure partner. Their love story was one for the ages. Together they drove to 48 states and ultimately visited all 50, sharing a love of travel and discovery. Tybee Island held a special place in their hearts, but some of their sweetest moments were simply spent side by side at home reading and working the weekly crossword together. Rex adored Donna wholeheartedly; she was his whole world.
To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was simply “Papa.” And Papa was legendary. He wore a shirt that said it best: Papa. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. He was a tenderhearted grandfather who loved his grandchildren deeply and was endlessly proud of them. He rarely missed a game, recital, birthday, or milestone and treasured time spent together. He prayed faithfully for their futures and carried each of them in his heart. He was so deeply loved in return.
An avid member of the White River Yacht Club, Rex served as Commodore five times and held various other leadership roles. The club was more than a place to boat, it was a community he cherished. He spent countless hours there participating in Bible study, sharing stories, and reminiscing about old times with fellow members he deeply valued.
A devoted Christian and member of Heartland Church, Rex loved Jesus and lived out his faith daily. Scripture, worship music, and quiet time were anchors in his life. His faith shaped the way he loved, generously and sincerely.
Rex was known for his quick wit and quirky sayings. When someone told him it was nice to see him, he would grin and reply, “It’s better to be seen than viewed.”
Above all, Rex will be remembered for his extraordinary love for his wife, his family, his friends, and his Savior.
Rex is survived by his beloved wife Donna; his children, Randy, Jeff, Alora, and Tracy (Daniel); his grandchildren, Forrest (Mary Alice), Alexandra (Jared), Nathan (Taia), and Arynn (Jackson); his great-grandchildren, Zoe and Clover; and his siblings, Nancy and Ralph. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Russel.
Following Rex’s wishes, no services or celebration of life gatherings will be held. In his words “I’ve been to too many of those, and they’re never any fun.”
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Heartland Church Youth Fund – Fishers, Indiana.
