Reverend Curtis Day Sr was born January 9, 1936 in Sharon, Mississippi. He was raised in a Christian home with his mother Carrie Day, and they attended Pleasant Green Baptist Church. At the age of five years old his mother married Jimmie J. Montgomery in 1941. Jimmie became a father to her young son. Together they all moved to Jackson, Mississippi. There he attended public school in Jackson, Mississippi where he received his general education. He completed two years of high school in Jackson, Mississippi before the family moved to Indianapolis in 1944. Many years after his discharge from the United States Army he completed his high school education at Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis, Indiana evening division.
Curtis enlisted in the United States Army April 1, 1955 and was stationed at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. Curtis Private Class was transferred to Indiana where he was honorably discharged January 13, 1958.
Curtis was united in holy matrimony to Theresa Green on June 27, 1959, by Reverend Samuel L. Day in Indianapolis, Indiana. To this union was born Curtis Day, Jr., Patrica Ann Day, Theresa Day, and Wayne Elliott Day. He also became a father to Theresa’s young son Charles Green.
Curtis worked for R.L. Schulz construction company. After leaving the construction industry he was employed as a millwright by the Chrysler Indianapolis Foundry at the Tibbs Avenue plant from 1972 until 2005. On September 16,2003, Chrysler announced the Tibbs Avenue plant would be phased out over the next four years. The foundry closed on September 30, 2005 and Curtis retired.
Curtis’s hobby was traveling the United States in his customized van with his wife and young son, Wayne. Later he upgraded to a customized RV. Every Thanksgiving he would fry turkeys for the dinner.
Curtis was a member of First Samuel Baptist Church where Reverend William Smith was the Pastor. It was here that Curtis was ordained as a minister and gave his first sermon. He left First Samuel Baptist Church after many years had passed to join his uncle Reverend Samuel Day at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Upon his death he was elevated from an assistant minister to the Pastor and was installed by Elder T.R. Murff. He served as the Pastor until he retired due to health issues. His cousin, Reverend Joel Day became the Pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Reverend Curtis Day, Sr departed this earthly world life on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Wellbrooke of Avon Rehabilitation Center at the age of ninety years, two months, and eighteen days. He was preceded in death by his mother Carrie L. Day Montgomery, his step-father Jimmie J Montgomery and his mother-in-law Margaret Green, his uncles: William, Moses Sr, Jesse, Samuel, Elijah, Johnnie and Cooper Day his aunts: Mary Williams, Lela Jones, Fannie Williams, Lula Ryan, Lila Bell Foster, Missouri Powell, son Charles Green, daughter Patricia Ann Day and grandson Keith Lamont Hampton.
He leaves to cherish his memory wife Theresa Day, children Curtis Day Jr (Ruby), Theresa Springfield (Deryl), Wayne Elliott Day, and sister Linnie Montgomery. Grandchildren: LaTasha Timberlake, Devin Day, Brittany Day, Khara Smith, Monique Shanks, Christian Givens Sr, Jermaine Shanks, Nicole Springfield: Great Grandchildren: Jonathan Timberlake, Jeremiah Timberlake, Briella Jackson, Brelynn Day, Baileigh Day, Karter Massey, Brandyn Massey, Milo Ice, JeviPhoenix Ice, Marvel Lennex Ice, Crishawn Givens and daughter Crishea, Christian Ja’Niya Givens, Cresha Givens, Christian Givens Jr, Chandler Givens, Caleb Givens, Cierra Givens-Davis, Chazaiah Davis, Colton Davis, Zeiss Davis, Jaysia Shanks and son Malachi, Brianna Shanks and son Kaisen, Javenai Shanks, Jeremiah Shanks, Sincere Shanks, Tyler Smith, Terry Springfield and Derrick Springfield, Honoray brother James Alan Montgomery and a host of cousins and friends.
