Remedios “Medy” Alfonso, 91, of Bloomington, Indiana and later Westfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2023. Born on December 28, 1931 in Manila, Philippines, Medy was the daughter of Francisco and Ursula (Dikit) Kayas. In 1954, Medy married her high school sweetheart, Marcial Alfonso and, together, they had six children. In 1972, the family moved to the United States, specifically Bloomington, Indiana. Medy graduated with a Bachelor Degree of education from the University of the Philippines and a Master’s Degree in guidance counseling from Indiana University. She worked as an academic advisor at Indiana University for many years and was loved by all her students. In fact, she loved what she did so much that she went back to work on a part-time basis after her retirement.
Medy was also a huge IU fan, especially basketball. If she was watching a game, everyone in the house knew because of her loud cheering and shouting at the TV. Medy was a competitive mahjong player and enjoyed playing long into the night after family events.
Medy will always be remembered as the best cook, great party hostess, as well as a loving and caring mother, aunt, Lola (Tagalog for grandmother) and great grandmother.
Medy is survived by her six children, Marlon, Rubiwena Hehner (Richard), Marvin, Mark (Angela), Michael (Joy), and Melchor; her brother Francisco Kayas, Jr. (Isabelita); seven grandchildren, Rachel Steinhofer, Lance Simmons, Rebecca Luttrell, Sarah Hehner-Milby, Miranda Woldt, Stephanie Hehner, and Madison Alfonso; and seven great grandchildren. Medy is preceded in death by her husband Marcial.
