Rebecca Jean (Smelser) Butz
92 went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2012. She was born June 19, 1920 in Indianapolis, IN to Rebecca Ann Roberts Smelser and Robert Lee Smelser. She married Charles (Chic) T. Butz nearly 70 years ago. Her brother, Robert William Smelser predeceased her. Known to most as Jean or Stro, she was graduate of School 84, Shortridge High School, and Butler University. On November 26th, 1942, she married the love of her life, Chic Butz, and began a lifelong love affair. They knew one another for 80 years! The couple had three children: Ted Butz, Ann Dean (Carl), and "B" Baldwin (Herb). She has 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren with one on the way. Jean was a devoted, loving wife, perfect mother, marvelous grandmother (Grammy), and proud great grandmother. She touched all those fortunate enough to have known her. Jean was a fantastic cook, family organizer and party planner, dog lover (especially collies), and possessed a green thumb. She was a longtime member of the Riviera Club. In addition, Jean was a nursery school teacher at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church. Stro was a member of the DAR, Allisonville Christian Church, and participated in the same bridge club for 60 years. She was good natured and always had a smile on her face. Jean was a Cub Scout leader and a Girl Scout Leader. Stro was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. We want to thank our wonderful loving caregivers, Erica Cooper and Jennifer Armstrong. In lieu of flowers, Jean would like donations to Riley/IU Children's Hospital, the Salvation Army, or donor's favorite charity. The service will be 1:00 pm at Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple, on Saturday, August 4, with calling from 11:00 to 1:00. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
