Raymond W. Karnafel, a beloved high school teacher and devoted father, passed away peacefully in Indianapolis on September 18, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on May 6, 1934, Ray spent his life dedicated to nurturing and educating the hearts and minds of his students at Warren High School, where his passion for teaching left a lasting impression on countless young lives.
Ray was more than just an educator; he was a devoted father who cherished every moment spent with his daughter, Holly. Together, they created a tapestry of precious memories, from joyful trips to Arizona and family visits to Hammond, to delightful outings at the zoo and the exhilarating atmosphere of the Indy 500, where they spent many memorable years together, sharing laughter and priceless experiences. His unwavering support for Holly's love of animals was evident in their shared home filled with cats and birds that breathed life and joy into their daily routine.
In addition to his role as a father, Ray was characterized by his caring nature and profound love for those around him. His strong faith in God anchored him throughout life’s trials, and his resilient spirit shone brightly for everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was known for his great personality and inner strength, embodying qualities that inspired and uplifted others. He was a long-time member of Central Christian.
Ray’s interests extended beyond the classroom and included a lifelong love for sports. As a high school swimmer who participated in the swim team, his passion for athletic pursuits continued throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling with friends and was an avid golfer. Conversations about the Chicago Bears and Cubs filled his days with enthusiasm and camaraderie. Though soccer didn't capture his affection, he never hesitated to spend hours watching baseball, hockey, football, and basketball, fully immersing himself in the joy of sports.
Above all his accomplishments, Ray was most proud of his daughter, Holly, reflecting the love and devotion he poured into fatherhood.
Raymond is survived by his beautiful daughter Holiday Karnafel.
His legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and the value of family, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and love him. As we remember Ray, we carry forward his spirit of love, his zest for life, and the endless treasures of the memories he crafted with grace and dedication.
