Ray Gordon Selbo

March 23, 1940 — May 8, 2024

Westfield, IN

Ray was born to Arthur Gordon Selbo and Helen Evelyn Peterson (Selbo) in Jamestown, ND. After his father's passing, Helen married John Johnson and the family moved to Minneapolis. Ray graduated Roosevelt High School in 1958 and enrolled at the University of Minnesota, completing two semesters of college before joining American Hardware Mutual Insurance Company in Minneapolis. In 1961 he accepted an opportunity to transfer to the Menlo Park, CA office where he met Joy Marget Bostrom. The two were married in 1964.

Ray was drafted into the army in 1963 and completed basic training at Fort Ord, CA. He received further training as a broadcast specialist, deploying to Okinawa with the 14th PsyWar Battalion. Late in 1964 the battalion was assigned to Vietnam and went in-country with the 173 Airborne. He carried out various missions detached to both the South Vietnamese Regular Army and U.S. Army Special Forces. After completing his tour of duty, he returned to the U.S. in 1965.

In 1970 Ray and Joy moved back to Minnesota where their children were born: Jon Gordon (1971) and James Everett (1973). They transferred from Bloomington, MN to Wheaton, IL and eventually to Marshall, MN where he took a job with the Schwan's Company as the director of training in 1981.  This would become his favorite role.  He went on to teach managing skills for Fred Pryor and finally went back to a sales role with Home Depot.  After his retirement, Ray and Joy relocated to Westfield, IN to be near family.

Ray is survived by his loving wife Joy. Children: Jon Gordon (Kathy) and James Everett (Fawn). Grandchildren: Joshua (Julia), Jason, Justin, Jacob, Jordan, Jaden, Jameson, Jaci, and Jerica. Great-grandchildren: Dax, Seveya, Jaxxen, Kya, and Lilliana. No less loved were Ray's adopted family James (Kira) Breczinski, their children Skylar and Malachi (Sierra), and grandchild Selah.

Ray was a loving husband and father. His quiet, gentle way and dry sense of humor were a blessing to all who knew him. He leaves his steadfast support, love of cribbage, and crossword puzzles with his children and grandchildren.  We will miss him greatly.
