Ralph Derrill Freund

Ralph Derrill Freund of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away unexpectedly at home on October 6, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born June 10, 1938, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Otto and Iona Glidewell Freund. Ralph was a Union Insulator for Local # 18 for over 30 years. He was born in the back of the Maywood Tavern and lived there until the time of his marriage to Judy Mullis in 1959. Ralph took over management of the Maywood Tavern after the death of his mother in 2005. Ralph was a sports enthusiast and Ben Davis High School graduate who had his high school basketball career interrupted due to a motorcycle accident which nearly took his life. He went on to compete against his son and young cousins in motocross. He loved to water ski, play euchre, fish, hang out with friends at his pool, and he was quite the arm-wrestling champ. Ralph loved his children, his grandchildren and his extended Freund family. Ralph is survived by his longtime life companion, Peg Alexander, his children, Tim Freund (Rea Watson), Terri Shedd (John Southerland), his grandchildren, Jackie, Kristen, Robyn, Danielle, and Brad, and great children Juniper and Wren. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Kim, his granddaughter, Katie, his stepdaughter, Shelly, his sister, Ruth, and his brother, Bob. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, 4:00pm-8:00pm and Tuesday, October 14, 2025, 10:00am-11:00am at Flanner Buchanan Decatur Township with the Funeral Service immediately following at 11:00am. Ralph will be laid to rest at the West Newton Cemetery in West Newton, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
