Phyllis Jean Kinghorn, age 78, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, after courageously battling a chronic lung infection for several years. Her strength, grace, and unwavering spirit remained evident throughout her illness, and she was surrounded by love in her final days.

Phyllis is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Bob Kinghorn, and her brother Dennis Dawes. She also leaves behind a large and cherished extended family—sisters‑in‑law, brothers‑in‑law, cousins, nieces, and nephews—each holding countless memories of her kindness, humor, and generosity. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charley and Mary Dawes, her parents‑in‑law, Ione and Wilfred Kinghorn, and her treasured dogs, Buffy, Sadie, and Abbie, all of whom brought her great joy.

Born and raised in Indiana, Phyllis attended Washington High School and later graduated from Northwest High School in 1966. She continued her education at Indiana University before beginning a career marked by dedication and reliability. Phyllis worked at Link‑Belt and later spent 13 years in the office at United Parcel Service. After retiring from UPS, she continued to share her talents at Brebeuf Jesuit High School, where she worked for six years. Beyond her professional life, Phyllis found fulfillment in giving back to her community through volunteer work at the Fishers YMCA.

Phyllis was an avid reader and a lover of simple joys. She delighted in playing euchre, going to the movies, bowling, collecting, gardening, and hunting for bargains. She and Bob shared many wonderful memories of Caribbean cruises, and Phyllis especially cherished time spent at the beach, where she felt most at peace.

Animals held a special place in Phyllis’s heart. She was a regular donor to the Hamilton County Humane Society and found daily joy in watching the deer, rabbits, and birds that visited her backyard. Her yard and garden were her pride—especially her beloved pink geraniums, which she tended with meticulous care.

Family was central to Phyllis’s life. She looked forward to reunions in Louisville, Kentucky, and often hosted warm, memorable Christmas celebrations. Known for her exceptional organization and attention to detail, Phyllis kept an impeccably tidy home, complete with carefully labeled files of receipts and warranties. She truly lived by the motto: a place for everything and everything in its place.

Phyllis will be remembered for her gentle nature, her steadfast love for family, her generosity, and her remarkable ability to bring order and beauty to the world around her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

The family invites friends and community members to gather in remembrance and honor of Phyllis's life during the visitation and funeral services. Visitation will be held on July 1, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), located at 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250. Funeral services will follow at the same location, beginning at 12:00 PM.
