Phyllis A. Evens

Sep 25, 1937 — Oct 19, 2026

Carmel, IN

Phyllis Ann (Kincaid) Evens of Greencastle, Indiana passed away peacefully on October 19, 2026, at Sunrise Senior Living in Carmel, Indiana. Phyllis “Philly” was born in Thorntown, Indiana on September 25, 1937. Her parents were William Cobb Kincaid and Olive Mae (Parks) Kincaid. She was the youngest and last surviving of four siblings (Marilyn Bast, Donald Kincaid and Norma Castetter). Phyllis graduated from Thorntown High School in 1955. She then embarked on a career with ever increasing responsibility in the legal field as a legal secretary with Kightlinger & Gray, the construction industry at Tousley-Bixler Construction Co., Inc., and later for manufacturer Peerless Pump Company. During her time in Indianapolis, Philly was set up on a blind date with the love of her life, Marvin A. Evens.

Philly and Marv were married on March 26, 1971. Together, they built a wonderful life and legacy in short order having two sons in rapid succession in 1972 and 1973 while establishing Walnut Creek Farms in 1977 and operating a John Deere Implement dealership in Greencastle from 1984 to 1992. Her grit, resilience and “can do” attitude was called into action with the tragic death of her beloved “Marvin” on April 11, 1992, in a plane crash at Grissom Air Force Base.

Despite the adversities and challenges thrown her way, she managed to continue their shared dreams while putting Pat and Chris through college, surviving breast cancer, helping Chris through law school, and supporting Pat’s desire of becoming a commercial pilot. Her selflessness, positive attitude and constant smile will be her enduring traits that we will always hold near and dear to our hearts.

Phyllis is survived by her sons (and daughters-in-law): Patrick R. Evens (Barbara) of Westfield, Indiana and Christopher A. Evens (Rachel) of Carmel, Indiana. In addition to her children, ten grandchildren survive her: Colin, Josh, Grant, Graham, Liam, Harper, Reid, Cole, Brooke, and Leigh Kincaid, named after her, along with too many nieces, nephews and cousins to count from the Kincaid, Parks and Evens families.

Phyllis enjoyed a wide range of interests throughout her life. She loved attending Staughton First Christian Church, playing bridge, volunteering at the Putnam County Hospital and being active in her local sorority chapter (Kappa Delta Phi) as part of the chapter’s board of directors and treasurer. But above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, living room concerts and plays, vacations to Lauderdale by the Sea and enjoying family time at Fountain Park Chautauqua.

Visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan Funeral Home located at 325 East Carmel Drive, Carmel, Indiana 46032 on October 30, 2026 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a service to follow at 11:30 a.m.
