In Loving Memory of Phyllis Marie Calhoun
March 24, 1934 - December 9, 2023
Phyllis Marie Calhoun, beloved sister, aunt and friend passed away peacefully at home with family in Big Canoe, Georgia, on December 9, 2023. She was 89. Phyllis was born on March 24, 1934, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, to Troy and Mollie Calhoun as the fourth of twelve children.
Phyllis spent many years in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where she became a successful computer programmer during an exciting time when many women did not work in technology. Her work took her to different cities each week and she developed a love for travel and adventure.
In later years, Phyllis returned to be with family in Indianapolis and became the dedicated full-time caregiver of her mother while patiently restoring her treasured historic bungalow home. She then retired in Atlanta, Georgia, with family where she spent the last two decades of her life. Lovingly known as “Sissy” to some, she was a lover of books, crossword puzzles and any desserts.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Emma Calhoun and Minnie Smith, and brothers James Calhoun, Kenneth Calhoun, Jay Calhoun, and Roy Calhoun.
She is survived by her brother Don Calhoun and sisters Patricia Burnette, Bonnie Avila, Jean Carol Burton, Henrietta Graham, and twenty nieces and nephews. Phyllis’ quiet, caring and witty spirit will carry on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of life will be held at Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana) on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 2 pm.
