Philip W. Pryor, M.D., 64, passed away April 26, 2014. He was born July 1, 1949, in Bloomington, the son of the late Harold Vestle Pryor and Phoebe (Sparks) Pryor.
He received his BS in Industrial Engineering and MS in Systems Engineering from Purdue University. He then obtained his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine followed by residency in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. In 1985, he completed a spine surgery fellowship with a pioneer in the field. In 1987, he founded The Spine Institute, now located in Carmel. He has conducted and published several scientific studies and was active in numerous medical societies.
In his free time, Dr. Pryor enjoyed building computers, photography, and appreciating scenery. Most importantly, he had the opportunity to be "Papa" to seven grandchildren.
Dr. Pryor is survived by his children, John David (Stephanie M.D.) Pryor M.D., Lisa Jean Allen, Philip Matthew (Courtney) Pryor; grandchildren, Aliyah, Mackenzie, Jada, Liam, Ella, John Lucas, and Charlotte; companion, Rebecca Hess; sister, Barbara (Everett) Harvey; and step-mother, Kermilla Pryor.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at Flanner and Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.
