Peter “Pete” Buttram, 74, passed away on March 28th, 2026. He was born in Springfield, OH on December 21, 1951, to the late Worth and Mildred Buttram.
Pete grew up in Texas in his early years, and the family moved back to Indianapolis and lived on the east side of Indy. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1970. He also graduated from the Indiana State Police Academy.
He worked for the Airport Police Department. He was hired by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department in 1978 and worked there until the merger in 2007 with Indianapolis Police Department, which became the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. He retired in 2010 after serving 32 years as a police officer. During his time with the police department, Pete worked in the MCSD Jail Court Line, Supervisor for MCSD Jail visitation. He continued his career in the Crime Prevention Unit and helped as a Youth Education Coordinator for Marion County Schools, Jack Cottey’s Youth Camps and School’s Choices and Consequences programs. From there he was promoted to Sergeant and became Supervisor of Child Abuse/Sex Crimes and Adult Sex Crimes.
Pete had a big heart and enjoyed giving back to the community. He was a football coach for many children through the Lawrence Youth Football League for many, many years.
Pete had many interests and hobbies including music especially Rock, history, building models and playing in many Rock Bands as a guitarist. Pete was also Mason of Oaklandon Lodge #140 and a 33rd Scottish Rite.
Many people remember Pete and his wit and sense of humor and have lots of stories about him.
Pete also had many “Peteyism’s” that made people laugh and that he will be remembered by.
Pete married Becky Moberly Buttram in 1982, and they shared 44 years together, creating a wonderful family and a life well lived.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tom Buttram (Donna) and his granddaughter Evelyn (Evie) Young.
Pete is survived by his wife, Becky, his daughters Gayle and Sara Buttram, grandchildren Aidan and Avery Young, his brothers David (Jackie) Buttram and Jon (Sharon) Buttram, brother-in-laws Rick Moberly and Ron Moberly (Heather) and lots of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation for Pete will be held Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East from 4pm – 8pm. His funeral will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Noon. Burial will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
