Peter Paul Hawryluk

July 1, 1931 — February 24, 2021

Zionsville, Indiana

Peter Paul Hawryluk passed away peacefully on February 24, 2021, at the age of 89 following a battle with cancer. He was born in Somerset, NJ, on June 20, 1931, to immigrant parents, Michael and Meri Hawryluk. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann Moore Hawryluk, his children P. Kent Hawryluk, Jetta Boschen (Dallas), and two granddaughters, Kinsley and Hadley Bushonville. He was pre-deceased by his siblings John Fedors and Susan Fedors Lakat as well as his nephew John Fedors, Jr. He grew up in New Brunswick, NJ and graduated in Engineering from Princeton University in 1955. He also earned an MBA degree from Drexel University. After college he served three years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force later achieving the rank of Captain in the Reserve. Following his military service, he and Ann married and he began a 25 year career with General Electric (GE). His GE career eventually brought him to Indianapolis in 1978 where he remained until his death. After his early retirement from GE, he became a principal owner of an established electronics manufacturing company, Dart Controls. In addition, he launched a residential development company, Balamor, whose projects included the Carmel community Huntersfield, and a power semiconductor distributorship, InterTech Resources.

Peter’s interests were broad and varied. Ham radio was an important hobby during his youth and by the time he entered high school, he held a class A amateur radio license. A passion for aviation, he was a civil air patrol cadet and during college served in Air Force ROTC. During his retirement years he became a private “pleasure” pilot and enjoyed that pursuit immensely. Peter was deeply engaged in politics and participated in major fundraising efforts for candidates on the local, state and national levels. He was very involved with the Republican National Committee and served as Indiana finance chairman of two Republican Presidential campaigns. Peter was appointed by President George W. Bush to the United States Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad. He served our country proudly in that capacity.

Peter was actively involved with Princeton University for most of his life, including serving in leadership roles for his class, assisting with fundraising, and helping to establish and develop Princeton AlumniCorp (previously known as Project ’55). In 2011, he was honored with the Distinguished Achievement award for the Class of 1955.

He wrote: “I was quick to embrace Princeton and its long-standing traditions. During senior year I thought a great deal about my life’s goals and code of conduct. I set high standards. In a sense I wanted to uphold Princeton’s reputation for excellence. Princeton’s motto ‘In the nation’s service’ resonated with me. It influenced the manner in which I would later interact with my community.”

Peter and Ann traveled extensively to all continents with the exception of Antarctica which remained on his “bucket list.” Peter also loved nature and enjoyed caring for his property. During the recent Ash borer infestation, while well into his 80s, Peter cut down 35 infected Ash trees with some being up to 80 feet in height.

Peter achieved success in athletics late in life, earning numerous medals at the state and national level. Competing in the 2011 National Senior Games, he tied for third place in the high jump category.

Peter was a devoted husband and a doting father and grandfather who demanded the best from us. He was actively involved in our activities and pursuits. He instilled in us the importance of setting goals and embracing a code of conduct. He personally gave thanksgiving for God’s intervention in all of our lives.

Having lived in Zionsville for 43 years, he loved his community. Zionsville Presbyterian was his and Ann’s church home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Lions Club of Zionsville or Watch us Farm (www.watchusfarm.com), a private non-profit organization employing high-functioning adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

A visitation will take place on Monday, March 1, 2021, at Flanner Buchanan located at 105 W. Pine Street, Zionsville, IN, from 4-7 p.m.
