Peter Henry Reigert passed from this world on Monday, March 16, 2020. He was born on September 9, 1927 in Meservey, Iowa, the second child, and elder son of Marie and Peter H. Reigert.
Pete grew up in Gary, Indiana and attended Tolleston High School. He served in the United States Navy for 14 months at the end of World War II. His favorite president was Harry S. Truman, who Pete credited with keeping him out of harm’s way in 1945. He attended Valparaiso University and Purdue University, earning a degree in civil engineering. He spent the bulk of his career working at U. S. Steel, Gary Works, with a short employment at Lockheed Missiles in Santa Cruz, CA. Pete met his wife, Terry (Rose Theresa Curley) in Gary and they married in 1954. Their daughter, Mary, was born in 1959 in Santa Cruz. Following his retirement, he and Terry retired to Green Valley, AZ where they enjoyed the mild climate and Pete played horseshoes at least weekly. They moved to The Forum at the Crossing retirement community in Indianapolis in January, 2013, so Terry could receive Care for Alzheimer’s disease and live closer to their daughter. Pete and Terry both participated in as many activities as possible at The Forum and made many good friends there. Pete’s beloved Terry died in February of 2018 and he sorely grieved her passing. Over time, macular degeneration robbed Pete of most of his eyesight, which was a major frustration for him. His decline was gradual, culminating with his peaceful passing at his daughter’s home on March 16, 2020.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Klee, son-in-law, Joel Klee, sister, Margaret Lane of Texas, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at both Transitions palliative and hospice care and Alliance Home Health for their compassionate care of Pete in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515
