Peter “Pete” Heles was born October 30, 1954, the son of Patrick and Angala Heles, during their time in Fort Bragg. Upon his father’s retirement from the US Army the family settled in Worthington, MN. In his youth Pete loved to golf and hunt.
Pete graduated from Worthington Senior High school in 1972 where he met the love of his life Peggy Hansberger. After graduating from the University of South Dakota in 1975, Pete started his career in sales. For many years Pete was considered a pioneer in the field of information technology taking the opportunity to work with companies large and small around the world.
Pete’s life was filled with many memorable events. In 1969, Pete attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and watched the moon landing with 34,000 other scouts from across the world. 1971 presented Pete with a major challenge: he was struck by a boat propeller while enjoying Worthington’s Lake Okabena. You could say this turned him into quite the advocate for boat and water safety. In 1990, Pete won a Novell sales contest earning the greatest of all prizes; a BMW convertible. Not being a “car guy” he took the money instead and invested it in his next venture at Lantech of America in Indianapolis. This brought the family to Indiana where they put down roots and eventually completed the adventure of building their family home. Throughout the 26 years on 300 South in Zionsville, many memories were made with family and friends. As their sons grew, Pete and Peggy became involved in supporting the boys’ many activities from sports (especially hockey) and boy scouts to church events and the arts (especially choral groups). In retirement, Pete enjoyed exploring family genealogy, attending Arden’s school events, and fellowship with various small groups of friends. Constant companions during Pete’s life went beyond his human friends and included six fluffy Samoyeds, lovingly referred to as “floofers” by Pete’s granddaughter. Most of these “floofers” were rescue dogs. But Pete also loved one very good mouser, Smokey the cat, who thought he was a dog.
Pete was proudest of his roles as husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest passions were his family and his friends. Pete is survived by his loving wife, Peggy of 50+ years, sons Benton Heles (Kelly Meadows) and Patrick Heles (Mercedes Ward) and granddaughter Arden Heles.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Patrick Sr. and Angala, brother Patrick Jr., and twin daughters Molly and Megan.
