Pauline Elaine Watling was born in Dundee, NY, on April 5, 1932. She was the fifth child of Hazel (Walsh) and Robert Graham Watling. She lived in Dundee for the first 12 years of her life until her parents decided to move to Lake Worth, FL, in 1944. She was the only child still at home at the time of the move, but that soon changed when the last of the six Watling children was born shortly before the end of that year. Pauline enjoyed the adventure of living in Florida and graduated from Lake Worth High School in 1950. After working in the West Palm Beach area for a couple of years, Pauline met and fell in love with Robert (Bob) Castle, from Canton, PA. In 1953 they were married and she moved back north with him. They lived in an apartment in Blossburg, PA, until Bob was able to complete the house he was building for them in Liberty, where he was the high school science teacher. Pauline continued to work for a time, but eventually decided to stay home to care for her son Tom and daughter Laurie. Once her children were successfully launched into the world, Pauline fulfilled her life-long dream of attending college, graduating from Mansfield University with her bachelor’s degree in 1987. When the state of Pennsylvania decided to expand Rt. 15 through the Liberty area in order to create the future I-99 Corridor, the Liberty house had to be torn down. Pauline and Bob bought a house further north in Tioga, PA. From the side of the mountain, they enjoyed an “endless view” of the valley below. They lived there together from 1987 until Bob died in 2001, and Pauline remained there alone until 2014 when she moved to be close to her daughter in Carmel, IN. She was happy to be able to see family members more often, but she never stopped missing her friends and the beauty of Tioga County, PA, where she had lived for a total of 61 years. She took her final breaths on May 26, 2018, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. She is survived by her two children, Thomas Castle and Laurie (Donald) Ross; 11 grandchildren, Stephen, Brian, John, and Andrew Castle, Rebecca (Robert) Ross Emerson, Jennifer (Justin) Ross Lange, David (Kacie Kasner) Ross, and Katherine, Michael, Patrick, and Timothy Ross; 8 great-grandchildren; a brother, Edwin Watling; and a sister, Margaret Sorensen. She was preceded in passing by her parents and three siblings, Loise Kiesling, Charles Watling, and Harriet Wever. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 1, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at the funeral home; and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Memorial contributions may be directed to St Vincent Hospice, 8450 N Payne Rd Ste 100, Indianapolis, IN 46268, or Calvary United Methodist Church, 6 Franklin St, Lawrenceville, PA 16929.
