Paul passed away after living a joyful 88 years. He was very loved by his daughters and their husbands, Kim and Sam Laurin, and Karen and David McAvoy. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Jessie Laurin Meek (Drew), V.S. Laurin, Aly McAvoy, Ryan McAvoy (Sarah), and Kyle McAvoy (Marita). He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sally Ohmart.
Paul earned a B.S. at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio), where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He and Sally met at Miami as students and were married in the campus chapel there upon graduation.
Paul began his working life at Indiana National Bank in Indianapolis and ended his 28 years there as a First Vice President managing the Indiana Mortgage Corporation’s Residential Division. During this time, he also served as the president of the Indiana National Corporation Officer’s Association.
He looked back with great pride on the neighborhood revitalization efforts accomplished through his work as chairman of the Indianapolis Urban Reinvestment Task Force’s lender subcommittee. He was also the president of the Career Education Builder’s joint venture project with the Indianapolis Public Schools and the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.
Beginning in 1989, Paul spent 9 years as Indiana Community Bank’s President and CEO in Lebanon, Indiana. During this time, he continued his civic involvement, not only as a Boone County Economic Development Corporation founding director and as a Boone County Education Foundation founding director, but also as the president of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce.
He also greatly enjoyed his time in the Indianapolis chapter of Rotary Club. He continued his work with the Rotary Club as president of the Lebanon chapter. He was a Paul Harris member of the International Rotary Foundation.
Following his “retirement,” he became a board member of Lafayette, Indiana Neighborhood Housing Services, and spent 8 years as member services consultant for the Indiana Bankers Association.
Paul was a Life Director of the Home Builders Association of Indiana, and looking at residential real estate was a personal passion. An ideal day was spent boating around Lake Wawasee, relating the lake’s history, and pointing out any and all property changes he noticed. One of his lesser-known talents may have been the ability to find the “best” Dairy Queens in the state.
Paul’s sense of humor and easy laugh were his hallmarks. He was the quintessential example of a man who never met a stranger. He will always be loved.
