Chaplain Paul E. Bates, 91 of Indianapolis, went to join his Lord in heaven on June 5, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Huff Bates, son Ronald W. Bates, mother Julie Bates, father Ernest, step-mother Gladys, sister Nellie West, and brothers Dwaine and Don. Paul is survived by his daughter Jean Ann Bates (Dolye) Henson; son Charles E. Bates; brothers Fred Davis and James (Rosemary) Bates; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren, and 10 nieces and nephews. Paul and his wife Jean ran the Inner City Chapel in downtown Indianapolis for 25 years and helped thousands of people in need. Jean also prepared many thousands of meals for the homeless and people in need. They were very special people, very giving and asking for nothing in return. Paul worked in the Indiana Prison system for 30 years as Chaplain at the Pendleton Reformatory and Michigan City Reformatory. He was treated with respect and compassion. Services will be Wed, June 8, 10am at the Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Washington Park East with visitation Tuesday, June 7 from 4 to 8pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons.

He is survived by his Daughter Jean Ann (Bates) Henson and husband Doyle, also a Son, Charles E. Bates all of Indianapolis. Also by his Brothers Fred Davis of Michigan and Brother James Bates and wife Rosemary. He has 12 grandchildren and 13 great Grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. He also had 10 nieces and nephews.

Paul was loved by everyone he met and he loved them also., he was the best father a person could ever have. My brother Charles and I will Miss him very much.
Our Family would like to thank the staff at Casleton Healthcare for all the caring and wonderful treatment they gave him. We also want to thank the staff at Community North Hospital for the care they gave while he was there and the Hospice Staff who cared for him the last 5 days he was on this Earth. He was treated with respect and compassion, that means so much to our family at this time.
