Paul A. Avery

Paul A. Avery, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 19 at home surrounded by family including his wife, Vir­ginia of 64 years. Born in Brattleboro, Vermont, he lived many of his child­hood years at the Kurn Hattin orphanage. He served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years on the USS Roanoke during the Korean War. While on leave in Milwaukee he met the love his life, Virginia at a USO dance. After the war, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and earned his CPA.

During his career he worked in the financial field and in 1980 relocated to Zionsville and served as CFO and VP of Legal and Governmental Affairs at St. Vincent Hospital – Indianapolis for 15 years. After retirement he continued serving as a board member at St. Mary’s Hospital – Saginaw Mich­igan, St. Joseph Hospital – Chicago, and various St. Vincent Hospital affiliated entities, as well as board member of Marquette Manor – Indianapolis.

He introduced his wife and children to the joy of camping, visiting many of our National Parks. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting with his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his son Kevin. He is survived by his wife Virginia; children Bryan (Stefani) of Appleton, WI, Maribeth (Greg) Mc­Curren Zionsville, IN, Keith (Benz) of Naperville, IL, and Lori Endicott, Fishers, IN; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was the eldest brother to siblings Robert (deceased), Arthur, Everett, Kenneth, David, Vivian, Barbara, and Joyce.

The Daughters of Charity who ran St. Vincent Hospital played an important role in Paul’s life. He was also a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Zionsville for 42 years and Twin Lakes Golf Club.

He will forever be in our hearts and we will miss him dearly. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name can be made to Kurn Hattin Home for Children, 708 Kurn Hattin Road, Westminster, VT 05158 (kurnhattin.org).

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 at Flanner and Buchanan – Zionsville on. A funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Zionsville.
