Patricia Roeder Shanklin, 85 passed away July 20, 2011. She was born in Indianapolis to the late Maurice and Edith Roeder. Pat, as she was generally called, graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1944 and she attended Purdue University. She then applied to become an airline stewardess; but just prior to her training, she was critically injured with a broken back in an auto accident. It was six months before she was able to sit up in the hospital, and when she walked again, it was with a troublesome limp.
Pat rallied from her back injury and became a secretary at Veterans Administration. There she met Joseph Shanklin, whom she married in 1953; he preceded her in death in 1979. They traveled much together.
She enjoyed working at International Harvester for 30 years and was the executive secretary when she retired.
She played cards in several bridge groups over the past years and also enjoyed luncheons with her high school group. An avid spectator of all sports, she particularly enjoyed watching Purdue football and basketball and remained a lifetime loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs. Both family and friends enjoyed her excellent sense of humor.
Survivors include several cousins, including Howard Beasley, to whom she was more like a sister. Family members are grateful to Sue Cooney and Donna Schneider for so faithfully assisting her during the past several years while she was confined to a wheelchair.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O.Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301
