Nell Norris Fitzgerald, 94, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, in Carmel, Indiana. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother (“Maugee”), teacher, and musician, Nell touched countless lives with her warmth, grace, and enduring love of music.
Born on December 22, 1930, in Boone, North Carolina, Nell grew up surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She was the sixth of eight children born to Jonathan Wilson ("JW") and Edith Norris. Nell’s love of music emerged early. A gifted musician, she was invited to play French horn in the college marching band and orchestra while still a Junior in high school—an early testament to her remarkable talent. Her passion led her to major in music (voice) at Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University), where she earned a bachelor's degree. She also played piano and filled her home with music throughout her life.
After graduating from Appalachian, Nell began a teaching career that spanned 18 years. She taught music in North Carolina before moving to Aberdeen, Maryland to teach at the high school. It was there that she met the love of her life, Joe Fitzgerald, on a blind date. It was love at first sight. They married just five months later because Joe was about to be discharged from the Army and leave Maryland to begin his studies for a career in medicine. Nell and Joe moved to Rensselaer, Indiana where Nell taught school and Joe studied at St. Joseph's College. Joe's acceptance at Indiana University School of Medicine took them to Indianapolis, where Nell continued to teach for several years. In every classroom she entered, Nell brought not only knowledge but also compassion and creativity—qualities that left lasting impressions on her students.
Nell’s love for music extended beyond the classroom into every church community she joined. She was a cherished member of the choirs at St. Andrew Presbyterian and Faith Churches in Indianapolis and was often featured as a soloist. Her voice uplifted congregations and brought comfort to many.
Those who knew Nell remember her not only for her musical gifts but also for her extraordinary kindness. She had an uncanny ability to shift focus away from herself and toward others—always asking how they were doing with genuine interest. Even though her ability to remember names faded in later years, her gracious spirit never dimmed. With a radiant smile, she made everyone feel seen and valued.
Nell is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Dr. Joseph Fitzgerald; daughters Cathy (David) Duclos, Susan (Tony) Bonanno, and Judy Fitzgerald (Cindy Collins); granddaughters Alyssa Bonanno (Will) Mayer, Gabrielle Bonanno, Isabella Bonanno, and Elizabeth Fitzgerald Farrell.
