Nancy W. Scifres, 96, of Fishers, IN, passed away peacefully on Saturday July 22, 2023, at IU Health North Hospital. She was born in Quincy, IL on April 19, 1927, to Paul A. and Lucile (Hawley) Wellington.
Nancy went to Knox College in Illinois and was 1 of 2 women graduating with a chemistry degree. She followed her parents to Indianapolis and worked at Eli Lilly in the Microbiology Lab for 10 years.
In 1954, she married Billy N. Scifres (Bayou Bill, Outdoor Editor for the Indianapolis Star). Nancy had 3 daughters: Donna (Fred) Riedel, Joan (Adam) Kendall and Patty (Mauro) Rosini, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Nancy had a pet care business and was a Campfire leader. Nancy was an active tennis player at the Carmel Racquet Club and organizer of the over-50 doubles league. She enjoyed playing bridge at the Indianapolis Bridge Center. She loved nature, her many pets (cats, dogs, bunny, robin, and raccoon), all wildlife, camping, birdwatching, photography and designing house plans. Nancy was a member of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church and the Magna Charta Dames, Indiana Division.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and husband.
A Private Family Visitation will be held on Monday, July 31, from 1:30 to 2:30, with a short Private Family Service to follow at 2:30, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road. Nancy’s final resting place will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
